Ice Climbing
Winter ice climbing in the Alps is becoming more and more popular. Our ice climbing courses and private ice climbing guiding is based in and around Chamonix and/or Cogne. Either offers the perfect range for beginner
ice climbers or those with more experience looking to sample some classic alpine ice climbs. Within easy travelling distance of either base are many, many ice climbs and great ice venues to suit a range of conditions, such as the Swiss Valais or Aosta valley in Italy.
Season
The
ice climbing season is relatively short but there's a huge amount of ice, reliable
conditions and generally settled weather. Conditions start to build in December, but
by mid February things are often starting to warm up too much to climb
safely in many of the venues. This means that there are a limited number of weeks available
so it's important book early!
Level
We can
cater for anyone from complete beginners to people who have climbed
quite a bit before. It helps if you have worn crampons before, and
similarly you can already tie basic knots for climbing. The main thing
is you have warm, good quality outdoor gear for low temperatures (see
kit list)
Nick Bullock on Dame du Lac (Grade 6) - Don't worry this is one of the hardest routes around!
Equipment Provided
We provide all the ropes, climbing equipment, helmets and harnesses.
Axes and crampons are £5 per item per day to hire if you haven't got
your own. Plastic or fully rigid leather boots can be hired from in
Chamonix for a similar charge.
Ratios
Most
routes can be guided at a 1:2 ratio. Some routes may only be suitable
for guiding at 1:1, some longer or harder routes for example.
