Hokkaido Powder Seeker

January 2020

If you want to ride deep powder Hokkaido is the place to go! This is a mega-trip to sample the backcountry touring and off-lift riding in Niseko and outlying smaller resorts on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island and the place with the highest snowfall. In conjunction with local guides and with an IFMGA guide too, this is a chance to discover some of the worlds most reliable powder!

It’s a great mix of touring and using lifts, with the emphasis on finding great powder, (by hiking or not), enjoying Japanese culture, and seeing a lot of Hokkaido in a short time! It’s a wonderful place and the guaranteed powder snow makes it a great destination. What we do each day will depend on weather – if it’s snowing and cloudy we will be riding off lifts, if it’s good visability we will go touring.

Suitable for skiers or splitboarders. Ideally you should already be comfortable in powder snow conditions to make the most of this trip, but if you’re not that used to it you definitely will be by the end of the week! Fat skis (100mm+ underfoot ideal) or snowboard is obligatory!

Accommodation is a mix of western style and Japanese style ryokans in the mountains with hot springs (Onsen).  We will travel in private vehicle around the different areas so that we can have lots of options for seeking out great powder.
