Iceland Ski Touring

Ski Touring in North Iceland

Dates: TBA 2024

P1040635

North Iceland is a paradise for ski touring. The best time to go is late April and early May, for perfect spring snow, long daylight hours and beautiful skiing above the sea. The Troll Peninsula, near the town of Dalvik, is a skier’s and boarder’s dream with mountains falling into the sea as well as larger massifs inland, towards the interior of Iceland.

What does the trip involve?

After the international flight to Reykjavik, we take a short internal flight to Akureyri. The accommodation is 40 minutes drive from Akureyri, in a warm and comfortable guesthouse, where we will be hosted for the week, in twin rooms with all food and refreshments provided. From here we enjoy a tour each day to a summit or high pass, maybe even two on some days. Without the altitude the climbs are easier than in the Alps and 1000m+ of ascent and descent is a normal day. Transport is by minibus and the trip includes all transport and accommodation, all food and mountain guiding. Not included is travel to and from Akureyri.

What other options are there?

It’s possible to have heli assisted touring to get into the highlands on one or two days (optional), or even to ski from the lift system in Akureyri, but the real joy is to ski from the summits to the beach on great snow. Bad weather options include visiting hot springs, lava fields and the lake at Myvatn.  Conditions are often spring-like with amazing views, over the Arctic Ocean.  Most summits can be reached on skins, but for one or two we may use boot crampons for some sections.

Iceland is a great place to visit, so it’s well worth adding a few days onto the trip to see some more of the country.
